Every summer, I leave just as full as the students I serve.

Facilitating leadership sessions at @georgetownuniversity through the @nslcleaders program is always a JOY.

These students from around the globe come in ready to grow, and whew, when I see those lightbulb moments hit after I challenge them to look through a new lens? Pure magic.

And here’s the truth: their growth grows me too. These students are wild (in the best way)!💥

When they speak up, share boldly, shift perspectives, and shed tears, I learn something new every single time.

And a huge shoutout to my husband, Mo Shaw, for being my steady sounding board after every session. ♥️ He listens to my debriefs with full attention—even the teary ones (yes, mostly happy tears!). But every now and then, a student touches my heart so deeply that the mama in me rises up strong. Their stories stay with me, and I’m grateful to my husband for holding space for me.

We’re in this together. That’s not just a cute phrase—it’s the whole mission. 🌍💛

I challenge each student to not only return home as a stronger leader…
but to go back as a better human. Period.

The Texas Hill Country did not disappointment.

From our great host, the party people themselves, @philr1981 and @mbrich1981, they are truly the best host ever. Love y’all.

The weather was great, the animals were running free and @williamchrisvineyards was serving up their great hospitality for their April Release party.

We’ve met some wonderful people on our trips to the Freidericksburg area but @wineispunkrock (Francisco) takes the entire win!

He is the winery’s Client Experience Companion (I made that title up but feel free to have Chris adopt it 😀) and he literally saved the day.

In an odd twist of madness, a bracelet I was wearing fell off my arm and down the deck slats into the unknown. 🫣🫣🫣

I calmly announce to the group what happened and we followed it with, call @wineispunkrock!

Release day is extremely busy for the winery team so when he swiftly arrived at our table I explained what happened and said he could check on it tomorrow when things slowed down and I could pay to have it mailed to Houston.

Him: Let me see what I can do.

About 10 minutes later this beautiful soul appeared with my bracelet in hand. Face filled with sweat and that didn’t stop me from hugging him. ❤️ He saved the day and probably lots of firm questions from @mo_shaw on the ride back to Houston! 🙃🫠

Every time I leave this winery I conclude that the experience we encounter is due to great leadership for all the things needed to curate a great customer experience.

Keep serving Texas well @wineispunkrock and @williamchrisvineyards. 🩷🩷🩷

Black History Month: Walking, Talking & Leading in Confidence

When I stepped into my first corporate role as an Admin—a young Black woman in a world that wasn’t built with me in mind—I knew I had to be twice as prepared and three times as confident.

The energy trading industry was high-stakes, fast-paced, and overwhelmingly white males. But that didn’t stop me. I worked my way up to become one of the nation’s few Black-female energy traders. And through it all, I learned that confidence wasn’t just a nice-to-have—it was my power move.

That same confidence carried me from the corporate boardroom to entrepreneurship, where I now help powerhouse women leaders, business founders, and student leaders Lead Well and Live Well. We are intentionally learning to protect our well-being because my ancestors didn't have it as an option. It’s time to unlearn the idea that rest is a luxury—our well-being is non-negotiable.

Black History Month isn’t just about reflecting on the past; it’s about standing firm in the present and creating the future. I honor the bold Black leaders who kicked down doors before me, and now, I’m holding them open for those coming next. It’s not just a passion—it’s a responsibility.

And to today’s leaders—yes, times are challenging, and progress feels threatened, but let me be clear: WE CAN NOT QUIT.

Conflict isn’t the problem; it’s how you respond to it that makes all the difference.

I tell my leadership students that if your go-to move is to avoid conflict, you’re not sharing your voice. What if you have the solution, the key to unlocking the next big thing? Sure, it might stir the pot, create more work, or ruffle some feathers. But guess what? Great change rarely happens without a little dust being kicked up.

So, speak up, embrace the challenge, and know that the dust will settle. Use your voice—it's more powerful than you think!

As I honor my recovery week back in Houston and slowly unpack and put my office back together the messages from students continue to bring me joy and gratitude.

After interacting with about 1200 students this summer from 42 US states and 27 countries, I'm not surprised that I don't make every single one of them happy. I don't impact some of them how I would like to, but that number (based on reviews and feedback) is very small.

When I get messages like the one below I'm reminded of what I share in messages, "Don't focus on the 1 out of 100 that you didn't mesh with, focus on the 99 that you did."

One of the 99...

"This is ___, one of the students who attended the @nslcleaders Conference for Medicine and Health Care last session. I wanted to message you here and thank you for the work you put in for us at NSLC since I didn't get a chance to do it in person. I really appreciate your work with us because it really did get me out of my comfort zone, and even though I would be super stressed every lecture we had with you, I soon realized that I slowly opened up more and became less worried about talking in front of people. Although that anxiousness didn't disappear, I noticed that with every lecture that passed, my anxiousness wasn't as bad as before, which is a huge step for me because I have an anxiety disorder.

You pushing me out of my comfort zone made me realize that I may be able to speak to people freely without stress as long as I keep putting myself in situations where I am forced to, and I plan on making an effort to deliberately put myself in such situations in the future so that one day I may be able to speak freely without the burden of my anxiety.

Thank you so much for your work. You truly have played a big role in my progression as a person."
