Houston, we have liftoff! 🚀 Just wrapped our official @stepupwomensnetwork launch in Spring ISD, and let me tell you - these young women brought the energy and then some. They were not shy with their questions. 🫣🫢🫠

Being on Step Up’s board isn’t just a title for me, the work brings me joy. Watching these girls step into their power and realize they’ve got a whole village of women ready to pour into them? That’s the kind of energy that fills my cup.

Can we talk about Step Up’s CEO @deloresdruilhetmorton for a second? This woman is out here moving mountains and breaking down barriers for young women like it’s her daily cardio. Thank you for leading with such fierce grace and vision. We see you, we love you, and we’re honored to roll with you. Thank you to amazing staff, you ladies are fire! 💛

Dear Maven, today is your permission slip to pause. National Black Girls Day Off isn’t about doing nothing—it’s about doing what restores you and brings you joy.

As high-performing women, we carry vision, strategy, and sometimes the weight of (our) world on our shoulders. But even powerhouses need to recharge. Rest is not laziness; it’s leadership maintenance.

Here are two ways to rest—Maven style:

💜 Soul Rest: Step away from productivity and into presence. Sit outside, feel the sun on your skin, or sip tea without a to-do list whispering your name. It's going to be alright!

💜 Boundary Rest: Turn off notifications. Silence everyone who’s not adding to your peace today. Your energy deserves a guardrail.

At the top of COVID, I connected with a fellow business owner, @jourdanguyton, and had the chance to work with her on some content clarity for my business. From day one, she was sharp, creative, and full of fresh perspective.

Fast forward to last week—I finally got to hug her in person while I was in CA! And listen… it felt like we’d been girlfriends for years. No small talk, no awkward pauses. Just real talk about life, business, and dreams.

The highlight? Watching our teen and young adult ladies—nervous but oh-so-ready—moderate the program like pros. 👏 And let me tell you, when alumni took the stage to share how Step Up mentorship has changed their lives… whew, there were some ‘allergy eyes’ in the room. 💕

LaGina R. Harris is an ever evolving, multifaceted entrepreneur and mentee and Mel Matos is a member of my Leadership Wellness Circle private group, corporate professional and entrepreneur.

To say I’m so proud of these wonderful Co-Founders of @_melaninminds is an understatement.

These ladies met virtually during COVID and created MM out of a need they saw for BIPOC communities to receive more access to mental health services. They met for the first time in-person 18 hours before the first conference.

They, along with their board and amazing volunteers delivered excellence for their 5th annual conference over the weekend here in Houston, TX!

Nothing can stop the possibilities of what you have made an intentional decision to do. It doesn’t mean it will be easy but it does mean it’s possible.

Cheers to @laraeinfinity and @meltifaceted on seeing a need in our community, forming a non-profit and board and working to actively offer solutions.

These ladies met virtually during COVID and created MM out of a need they saw for BIPOC communities to receive more access to mental health services. They met for the first time in-person 18 hours before the first conference.

They, along with their board and amazing volunteers delivered excellence for their 5th annual conference over the weekend here in Houston, TX!

Nothing can stop the possibilities of what you have made an intentional decision to do. It doesn’t mean it will be easy but it does mean it’s possible.

Cheers to @laraeinfinity and @meltifaceted on seeing a need in our community, forming a non-profit and board and working to actively offer solutions.

The Texas Hill Country did not disappointment.

From our great host, the party people themselves, @philr1981 and @mbrich1981, they are truly the best host ever. Love y’all.

The weather was great, the animals were running free and @williamchrisvineyards was serving up their great hospitality for their April Release party.

We’ve met some wonderful people on our trips to the Freidericksburg area but @wineispunkrock (Francisco) takes the entire win!

He is the winery’s Client Experience Companion (I made that title up but feel free to have Chris adopt it 😀) and he literally saved the day.

In an odd twist of madness, a bracelet I was wearing fell off my arm and down the deck slats into the unknown. 🫣🫣🫣

I calmly announce to the group what happened and we followed it with, call @wineispunkrock!

Release day is extremely busy for the winery team so when he swiftly arrived at our table I explained what happened and said he could check on it tomorrow when things slowed down and I could pay to have it mailed to Houston.

Him: Let me see what I can do.

About 10 minutes later this beautiful soul appeared with my bracelet in hand. Face filled with sweat and that didn’t stop me from hugging him. ❤️ He saved the day and probably lots of firm questions from @mo_shaw on the ride back to Houston! 🙃🫠

Every time I leave this winery I conclude that the experience we encounter is due to great leadership for all the things needed to curate a great customer experience.

Keep serving Texas well @wineispunkrock and @williamchrisvineyards. 🩷🩷🩷

Black History Month: Walking, Talking & Leading in Confidence

When I stepped into my first corporate role as an Admin—a young Black woman in a world that wasn’t built with me in mind—I knew I had to be twice as prepared and three times as confident.

The energy trading industry was high-stakes, fast-paced, and overwhelmingly white males. But that didn’t stop me. I worked my way up to become one of the nation’s few Black-female energy traders. And through it all, I learned that confidence wasn’t just a nice-to-have—it was my power move.

That same confidence carried me from the corporate boardroom to entrepreneurship, where I now help powerhouse women leaders, business founders, and student leaders Lead Well and Live Well. We are intentionally learning to protect our well-being because my ancestors didn't have it as an option. It’s time to unlearn the idea that rest is a luxury—our well-being is non-negotiable.

Black History Month isn’t just about reflecting on the past; it’s about standing firm in the present and creating the future. I honor the bold Black leaders who kicked down doors before me, and now, I’m holding them open for those coming next. It’s not just a passion—it’s a responsibility.

And to today’s leaders—yes, times are challenging, and progress feels threatened, but let me be clear: WE CAN NOT QUIT.

I’m excited to share that I’m joining the Southern Region Board for @stepupwomensnetwork, the mentorship nonprofit that guides girls (and those who identify with girlhood) on their path to success. With structured mentorship programs, focused support, and inspiring connections, Step Up has established a multi-generational community that shares the resources and relationships needed for individual and collective success.

As someone who believes in the power of mentorship and leading with confidence, I’m ready to bring my signature blend of strategy and sass to the Southern Region Board for Step Up. I'm joining in step with other powerful leaders to open more doors, build bigger dreams, and show the next generation of leaders what’s possible!
